EMI Sold To Universal Music Group | |
Universal Music Group appears to Many in the public world have been surprised over the sell. Those that have been more heavily involved in EMI's inner workings are not. Part of this is due to the turbulent past few years that EMI has endured. It is true that EMI is one of the powerhouse labels in the music world, but their past shows how even the dominant have problems. In 2009, EMI showed a debt base of roughly 2.5 billion US dollars. In 2010, this debt sky rocketed to 4 billion US dollars. It was in the beginning of 2011 that Citigroup took full ownership of EMI and wiped out over half of the debt (According to two sources). We jump forward to less than a year later and Citigroup is selling this historic label. With a going price of almost 2 billion US dollars, Universal Music Group will be getting all the catalogs that are part of the EMI label. Some of the current music artists they are gaining are: They also will be obtaining the rights to some of the legendary bands of old such as: What will come next for EMI is something we will all have to see.
